Practicing transcendental meditation (which involves repeating a personal mantra or phrase) may reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke by 15 percent or more since it lowers your blood pressure, according to an analysis of more than 100 studies on stress reduction methods.

Take a breather with this easy exercise from Isabella Bates, a teacher at the Center for Integrative Medicine in Washington, DC.

1. Relax your jaw and allow your top and bottom teeth to separate.

2. Drop your shoulders and relax your neck.

3. Place your hand on your lower ribs (near your waist) to feel them expand as you breathe.

4. Breathe in and out for counts of three. As you inhale, think "peace." As you exhale, think "calm." Practice for five to 20 minutes, until you can slow down your breathing (counts of four or longer).
