What is the weather?

The most beaten metaphors used to determine variability are female mood and weather. And it is true that it may be more impermanent than the complex of natural phenomena that we observe daily and which we call the weather. Unlike the climate, which determines the perennial mode of a combination of meteorological phenomena typical for a given area, the weather even during the day may change to diametrically opposite indicators.

Weather factors

Considering more carefully what the weather is, it should be noted that this term refers to the state of the atmosphere at a selected point in time at a particular location. The weather condition is characterized by such indicators as temperature and humidity of the air, amount of solar radiation, atmospheric pressure, wind direction and speed, precipitation and cloudiness. In this regard, the weather directly depends on the latitude of the terrain, the time of year and day, as well as on the formation and movement of atmospheric fronts, cyclones and anticyclones.

Weather forecast

Observation of nature-forming factors makes it possible to anticipate changes in the weather that should occur in a given area in the near future. This explains what the weather forecast is in terms of meteorological observations. The most reliable information about changes in weather is provided by observations of the movement of atmospheric masses.

  • Cyclones and anticyclones. The weather in most areas is determined by low pressure areas (cyclones) and high pressure areas (anticyclones), which are caused by the rotation of the Earth. In a cyclone, which is a huge atmospheric vortex, the air masses in the northern hemisphere always move counter-clockwise from the periphery to the center, and vice versa in the southern hemisphere. In the anticyclone, air masses move from the center to the periphery and rotate clockwise in the northern hemisphere, and vice versa in the southern hemisphere. Unlike the cyclone, which carries with it strong winds, squalls, precipitation, the anticyclone has a stabilizing effect and the weather stabilizes on its territory. Cyclones and anticyclones can exist both for a short time and for a rather long period of several months.
  • Atmospheric fronts. When warm air masses collide with cold air, cold air comes under warm air and an atmospheric front forms. A warm front is formed in the case when warm air goes up rather slowly, in which case prolonged drizzling begins. When raising warm air occurs quickly, heavy rains fall as a result of cooling.
