Preparing bees for wintering
Experienced beekeepers know, and beginners need to take note that the proper preparation of beekeeping by the cold period is a guarantee of the tranquility of toilers throughout the winter and early spring.
Preparation of bees for the winter: food
Providing food in sufficient quantities is one of the most important items for preparing a bee family for winter. Beekeepers know that it is undesirable to feed bees in the cold season. This once again breaks their peace.
Mortgage feed for the winter must be no later than September 20. It is on this day that the bees make their last flight before the cooling.
Padevyj and heather honey should be replaced, since in winter the first leads to diarrhea and death of insects, and the second quickly hardens, therefore, becomes inaccessible to bees.
It is also worth noting that too much food will lead to inability to recycle and seal it. The result is acidification of unsealed feed and insect disease. In addition, the young uterus during late feeding begins to actively lay eggs instead of preparing for winter.
Comfortable conditions for the wintering of bee colonies
The optimal temperature for wintering bees is 0–2 ° C. In a winter hothouse, it can be from -2 to +2 degrees. At lower or higher temperatures, families begin to worry, reproach, and leave the hive. Beginner beginners should remember that wintering bee families tolerate cold more easily than excess heat.
The ideal humidity for wintering bees is 75–85%. When the air is dry for a long time, honey crystallizes, which means that the bees cannot eat it. Insects start to get nervous, jump out of the entrance in search of a drink and die. Increased humidity leads to the development of mold on the walls of the nest and the oxidation of food, the result - sick bees.
Another important point is the lack of light. If the temperature in the winter cell is low, the light does not interfere with the bees, but when the temperature is above zero, the light pulls the families out of the nests, the insects are excited and fly out, which leads to the death of the bees in large numbers. That is why when visiting the winterer, beekeepers use only lanterns with a red light filter.
How to warm the hive for the winter, know experienced beekeepers:
- For insulation, do not use straw - it can get rodents. As a result, your favorite family will behave restlessly.
- Leave the space near the letkov, so that the air without problems entered the hive. Proper ventilation is a guarantee of a peaceful winter for bees.
- Take care that the hive is well insulated from the outside. In the space between the shield and the wall of the case you can place nut leaves or dry needles.
- For internal insulation use only natural materials. This may be a pillow made of rogoza, for example. It has excellent thermal insulation properties in winter, and in summer it keeps cool inside the nest.
As you can see, the maintenance of bee colonies is a very difficult task, if you are just starting your own business. Be vigilant, listen to the buzz of your pet, and he will tell you how well the insects hibernate.
