Brake pads are a key element of the braking system of any car. A good brake system is the key to our safety. In the article we will tell you how to replace the rear pads on drum and disc brakes. Change the rear brake pads: drum brakes
Of course, this process may be slightly different in cars of different brands, but the general scheme is similar. We will tell you about the replacement of brake shoes on drum brakes using the example of a VAZ car line. First of all, we advise you to evaluate the state of the pads without removing the drum. This can be done with the help of a special viewing window, which is located in the shield of the braking mechanism.

So, first you need to pry the plug (for example, with a screwdriver), which is mounted on a shield designed to protect against dust. After you have removed the cap, you need to remove the rear wheel, and also loosen the parking brake cable, for which you need to loosen the lock nut of the tensioning device. Next you need to unscrew the guide pins, then, using a hammer, start tapping them on the end of the drum, gradually turning it.
Then it is necessary to take a screwdriver and, having disconnected the end of the tension spring from the pad, remove it, and after that, having hooked, pull out the guide spring as well. Now it remains to remove the drive axis and, moving it to a new block, install it back, securing it. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order, that is, the tightening and guide springs are fixed first, then the pins and the parking brake lock nut are tightened, after which the wheel is put in place and the plug is inserted.
How to replace brake pads: disc brakes
The process of replacing brake pads on disc brakes is much easier than on drum brakes. To begin, remove the brake disc. In general, it should be noted that the brake disc is often not fixed and can be easily removed after the brake caliper is removed.
Of course, you can hear that some have used almost a grinder to loosen the discs - in practice this happens, if in rare cases. Usually, it takes a few blows to remove the disc. Of course, before doing this simple manipulation, do not forget to sprinkle at the junctions with a special lubricant for easier sliding of the tool - the so-called WD (you should always carry a bottle with this liquid with you - in the garage or in the car).
Now we have to replace the worn disk and install it back. However, we will give a little advice: if you decide to change the brake discs, then do not spare the money for the rest of your car’s brake system components: brake hoses, guide and parking brake cables.It’s all very expensive, but a fully updated braking system will serve you for a long time without fail. And one more note: this instruction is suitable for almost any brand of car, as disc brakes (like drum brakes) are roughly the same.
When should I change the brake pads
This question is asked not only by beginners, but also by other motorists with experience, who for the time being do not have to deal with the braking system of their cars. In fact, brake wear is a very individual process. That is why it is recommended to inspect the brake mechanisms at least every 10 thousand kilometers. This is especially important in the case of disc brakes, since they wear out much faster than drum brakes (the latter can reach 100 and even 150 thousand km). If you are a happy owner of a sports car, then you need to check the braking system more often, namely, every 5 thousand km.
About brake pad testing
After you put the new pads, they must be tested.First, check whether all the elements are well secured after the replacement, then put the wheels and lower the machine. Now start the engine and, without moving from a place, squeeze out a brake pedal against the stop. Do this ten times. After that, you can start off, but do not accelerate very much, because you need to slow down during the first test drive. Then go back to the place of inspection and inspect the brake system.
