How to eat in a Christmas post?
Christmas is a great holiday among Orthodox believers, which falls on January 7 of each year, the day when Jesus Christ came to this world. Believers prepare for this event with great responsibility, observing the Advent, which, according to the Christian commandments, lasts 40 days.
Zagovhenia (the eve of the beginning of fasting) falls on November 27, on this day the Orthodox honor the memory of one of the holy apostles Philip, from which another name came out of him - Filippov fasting.
The main purpose of this phenomenon is the spiritual cleansing of a person in order to meet the feast of Christmas with a clear heart and clear mind. Surely, many people know that during the period of observance of Advent, there are certain prohibitions on food, especially with regard to food of animal origin. That is why during the period under review meat, eggs and any dairy products are completely excluded from the diet.
However, it is important to remember that any post is not a blind rejection of the products listed, in the first place, it is a conscious step towards spiritual cleansing.
That is why the present fasting is characterized not only by certain prohibitions on eating, but also by the exclusion of all sorts of amusement activities, abstinence in marriage and the eradication of evil, sinful thoughts and deeds.
If you have never fasted before, then it is believed that Advent is the best start, because it is considered a lax fast that almost any newcomer can handle.
And yet, it is recommended that you do not rush headlong into the pool, trying to observe the strictest rules and recommendations from the first time, and gradually merge yourself and physically with preparing your body into such a food culture.
There are many recommendations on how to eat at Christmastime, but each of them can be approached creatively, even lean dishes from a fairly modest set of products can be very tasty and varied, most importantly, with the mind and imagination to approach this process.
According to all the canons of the period under review, a full restriction is introduced, as we have said, on meat and dairy products, while the others change depending on the period of fasting and the day of the week.For example, in 2014, the beginning of fasting falls on November 28 and right up to December 19, Wednesday and Friday are considered the most severe days, since at that time you can only eat cold, uncooked food (exhaustion). Usually on the tables these days there are fruits and vegetables, nuts, honey, and you can only drink water.
On the other days of this period hot vegetable food, fish, vegetable oil and even wine are allowed. Also, exceptions are big church holidays, in which the non-strict order of fasting is also observed, no matter what day they fall.
From December 20 to January 1, conditions become even more serious: on Tuesdays and Thursdays, fish are excluded. The hardest period starts from January 2 and lasts until Christmas Eve, January 6: wine and fish are prohibited, hot vegetable food is allowed only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The last day before Christmas is characterized by a complete refusal of food, and only in the evening, with the arrival of the first star, those who fasted can taste it.
Meals in the post should border with the mind and desire!
But, in fact, the most strict fast is observed only by monks and deeply religious people, and the degree of desire of ordinary people depends on their ability and individuality, which may depend on many circumstances.
For example, all the severity of the Christmas fast is not necessary for pregnant women, nursing women, the sick and children. After all, whatever it may be, there is a fairly decent list of diseases that do not allow the abandonment of animal proteins and iron, which are found in large quantities in meat.
The same applies to pregnant women, especially if the gestation period itself does not take place in the most relaxed manner, children who have metabolic processes occur much faster than adults. But at the same time, no matter how cool you are, any post is a great opportunity to unload your body from unhealthy and fatty foods, “restore order there”, getting rid of extra calories and overeating, which we allow ourselves on ordinary days.
When the Christmas fast begins, it is especially important to start it properly and successfully, and for this you need to competently approach the choice of products, the replacement of those that are prohibited during the fast period.
Due to the fact that in the post is allowed fish and seafood on certain days, the only task that is important to solve to ensure good nutrition, is the issue of lack of protein.Since animal proteins are under a complete ban, you can turn your attention to vegetable proteins.
Which products to choose?
Firstly, it is legumes. They contain a record amount of protein, but it should be remembered that it is quite a hard food for digestion, so they should be eaten with enough care. The next product in the ranking of the presence of protein - soy. For those who love it, Christmas fast won't be difficult at all, because soy is made from meat, milk and even mayonnaise!
But it is important to remember that in large quantities this product can negatively affect the endocrine system as a whole.
Various nuts, cereals and cereals are also a very valuable storehouse of various vitamins, acids and vegetable proteins. As we have said, the food in the Advent can be actively diversified, because recipes for lenten dishes that have a pleasant taste and increased utility are many.
For example, it is important not to forget to constantly diversify the side dishes, fortunately, now cereals and cereals in a wide variety are available to everyone: semolina, oatmeal, buckwheat, rice, pearl barley or flakes. The consistency of porridge can also be constantly changed: from liquid mash, like soup-puree, to crumbly.
A separate theme is salads and snacks, the variety and possibilities of which there is no end. As an option - fruit salads, dressed with low-fat yogurt, which are perfect for breakfast. You can also vary your food with salads from fresh or boiled vegetables, for example, from potatoes, cabbage, beets, bell peppers, greens, beans, green peas and canned corn.
You should not abandon the lean cakes, pancakes or pizza, which uses fresh or yeast without eggs and milk dough. Filling for them can act as mushrooms, potatoes, cereals, greens, fruits, fresh or canned.
As hot dishes, baked or boiled potatoes with mushrooms, cabbage pancakes, as well as various sauces, prepared on the basis of jelly, berries or crushed dried fruits. Naturally, during fasting, one should not forget about tasty food - honey, nuts, cocoa - available delicacies during this period.
For drinks, by the way, there are also certain restrictions - it is better to abstain from tea and coffee, but fresh juices and compotes are welcome!
