How To Buy Your First Horse

How to Buy Your First Horse if You Are a Nervous Rider

Steps

  1. Look for a calm horse that you like.If you are a nervous rider you should probably get a calm horse until you are more confident with your riding skills.
    • Mares and geldings are recommended as they tend to be calmer, but calm stallions can also be found.
    • A gaited horse (Tennessee walker, Walkaloosa, Saddlebred, Missouri Fox trotter, etc.) Is an amazing first horse.
    • If you have experienced horse friends, bring them along; the more the better.
  2. Once you've picked out a horse, ask to see it ridden, then ride the horse yourself.
    • If they don't let you ride the horse, go to a different stable.
  3. After you've ridden, decide if you like the horse and spend some grooming time with it.
  4. Get the horse on a trial period. If you like the horse, you need some time to see how it behaves everyday. Be with the horse as often as you can.
    • Do everything you would do if you were to own the horse, leave no stone unturned.
    • Have the horse looked at by a vet.
  5. Return the horse and tell the owner your decision.
    • Don't rush into buying a horse. This is a big decision and may take time.
    • If you feel the owner was not upfront about anything, be sure to address this.

  • Question
How can I tell if a young horse would be a good family horse?

    Community Answer
A horse of any age can be a great family horse. Ask to see how the horse responds to an inexperienced rider - its reaction to the inexperienced rider will indicate how it will react to other potential riders.
    Thanks!
  • Question
Should I even get a horse if I'm a nervous rider?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
Yes. Find a person who is knowledgeable in horses to help you pick out the horse that best suits you. Ideally, an older trail horse is perfect for nervous riders. as the horse will know what to do even when their rider is unsure of how to direct them.
    Thanks!

  • Try not to get fidgety around the horse, because it tends to spook or get uncomfortable around you. Stay calm around it.
  • If you can't go to other stables just look for the best horse that fits you at the stable your at and also try as many horses as possible before you make your decision.
  • NEVER buy a stallion as a first horse, they are unpredictable! Also when you go to look at the horse and it looks like it's been ridden or worked its probably not a good horse for beginners because they probably had to tune it in so they could trick you it's a good horse. Also just because a horse is older does not mean that it is suitable for beginners, and their can be young horses that are safer than older horses. If you want to become more advanced sometimes the horse is the best teacher, I was not confidant at riding until I bought my gelding and now we are jumping! Have fun!
  • Reconsider buying a horse if you can't ride at all or don't know much about horses. You can be a nervous rider, but not so nervous that you can't even walk. As long as you can give it basic care, enough exercise and a field then it is ok to buy. Just remember to think from the horse's point of view, and take it from there.
