Homeschooling: Pros and Cons
Some 100-200 years ago, homeschooling was almost the only educational system that existed in Tsarist Russia, European countries and the USA, although only children of noble, wealthy and wealthy families who could afford to hire trained tutors.
Gradually, home schooling was transformed into a relic of the past, it became prestigious to study in public schools and boarding schools, but as you know, everything new is well forgotten old. Nowadays, homeschooling systems are gaining their former popularity, today it is no longer an innovation, there is a growing number of children and parents who are abandoning the generally accepted foundations of studying in general schools.
What changed? Why did many parents no longer trust the traditional education scheme, according to which our grandparents were raised, the parents themselves, and continue to train most children and adolescents? Is individual education at home able to prepare a child as well as a teacher in a secondary school would do?
Let's try to figure out whether to deprive your child of a kind of "school of life" in general education institutions and take responsibility for the full education of his child at home.
For those who did not know, it is possible to study at home not only because of health problems that prevent the child from attending educational institutions, but also at the parents' own will. If everything is clear with the first case, then the second one raises many questions: how, in this case, is the transition to family education carried out?
Actually, there is nothing difficult in this, there has been a law for quite a long time already, which allows you to choose the most convenient form of education for a child, however, schools reluctantly go for it, because with each schoolboy who decided to study at home, she loses a certain percentage funding allocated by the state for each child.
For these purposes, parents must write a statement to the school stating the reason why the child will remain in family education. So, the reasons why you should teach your child individually or how to decide for yourself that your child is not created for the general education system and daily trips to school.
- Your child is far ahead in the development of their peers. It often happens that the child, having studied everything that was offered to him at the lesson, starts to get bored, all the other schoolmates are still absorbed in the process of attention, and this unique single turns and spins around, not knowing what to do by distracting the others. The teachers, noticing such a tendency, begin to give them tasks “in advance,” offering to jump a year or two to another class. But only a few who take into account that in such ways even the most hardworking baby can lose the desire to learn, and not all can get along with too old classmates, because your child's psychological and physical development is still at the level of his biological age.
- If your child is professionally engaged in some extra-school hobbies, for example, sports, dancing, music. Combining quality education and professional sports (dancing, music) sometimes becomes beyond the power of even the most talented child.
- If your work is connected with constant moving from city to city, because of what the child has to constantly change school. This kind of constant changes traumatize the psyche of the child, which can affect his academic performance and psycho-emotional state.
- Sometimes parents refuse to teach their child in educational institutions for ideological and religious reasons.
All the pros and cons of home schooling
In order to make a choice in favor of one form or another, it is necessary to carefully weigh all the pros and cons that are present in the individual education of children.
Most parents, when choosing homeschooling for their children, are sincerely convinced that they are able to educate their child on their own, acting as a teacher in any of the disciplines. True, not everyone takes into account that this will have to spend an enormous amount of time studying literature, choosing textbooks and developing an education program that your child will study.
If in the primary grades almost any parent is able to train their baby, then the science of the upper grades is often beyond the power of the parents themselves. Of course, it is possible to hire paid teachers and tutors for these purposes, but it should be noted that private lessons are not cheap, and you will have to spend a considerable part of the family budget.Free education in schools may not be the best, but in any case, an acceptable option for everyone.
There are positive moments, for example, freedom of choice. You can always decide for yourself which discipline should be studied now, and which one should be delayed depending on the age and interests of your child.
Another pleasant moment is that it is not necessary to force the baby to sit at the table at exactly 8 am and get up because of it at exactly 13, you can always adjust to the human biological clock, which will contribute to the active work of the brain.
On the other hand, what about the concept of discipline and organization, which should still be laid in the little heads of our children? At work, in the office or on pairs at the institute, no one will wait for your biological clock, and you will have to work strictly according to the schedule. Preparing for such "working days" of adult life, it should still be gradual.
The next moment is the question of adaptation and the ability to communicate in society, make friends, find their “allies”, and also repel “attacks of obvious competition”. Of course, a great life experience can be obtained on the same sports sections.or any other circles, where there are also peers and their social circle, but nevertheless, most psychologists believe that this peculiar "school of life" should be followed by everyone.
Children should be tempered, seek a way out of different situations, absorb not only positive but also negative experience, which you can not accurately teach in theory.
When your child, protected at home from all difficulties and problems, still "come out" and will face most of them ("a heavy boss," "student life," "gray working days, etc., etc.) , he can simply get depressed, not knowing how to live with it all further.
On the other hand, it has long been noted that children who are trained on an individual system learn information much faster. The topics and tasks that the school understands for weeks can be passed by the child for a day or two of home schooling, because the child in such conditions is more concentrated, he is not distracted by classmates, he does not have to hear by ear what can be read and explained several times.
It has long been noted that the knowledge of such children is one-third higher than their peers, besides, they are not loaded with homework and the scope of the schedule, so free time can be given to other sciences, which are not particularly considered in school conditions - painting, art, gardening, handicraft, etc.
