“Vitamin A is important to keep your skin structurally sound,” explains Joan Salge Blake, a clinical associate professor of nutrition at Boston University. “Otherwise, bacteria and viruses can more easily enter the body.”

Sweet potatoes are also packed with potassium, which lessens the effects of sodium on the body, warding off water retention and high blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association.
